The AVIC-S1: 26 European Countries in the Palm of Your Hand
Our first portable navigation device, the AVIC-S1, weighs only 180g and has over 7 million kilometres of European maps pre-installed and ready to use. Available from June 2006, it also offers hands-free phone control through Bluetooth.
The unit is fast and accurate. The 2GB of flash memory ensures there’s no delay when the unit is switched on and the operating system delivers very quick and precise route calculations complemented by timely guidance instructions. In addition, the high-performance SiRF Star III GPS receiver is included to ensure optimised GPS signal reception.
The unit has standard USB and SD memory card slots, so you have the flexibility of updating the software at any time.
Alongside the strong navigation performance, you can make hands-free calls through Bluetooth; once a compatible phone is paired with the device, it can be left anywhere in the car and the conversation relayed clearly using the AVIC-S1’s built-in microphone.
The device also supports direct dialling of numbers from its touch-screen, and additional features like call history. When paired with compatible phones, the phonebook stored on the mobile phone can be transferred to the memory of the AVIC-S1, allowing direct dialling from the phone book too.
To avoid trouble spots drivers can purchase an optional RDS TMC traffic information receiver for the AVIC-S1. This identifies issues ahead and advises on new routes to avoid them. Accident black spot locations may also be uploaded in the European countries where this information is publicly available.
The AVIC-S1 is easily and quickly fitted using a sturdy suction-mounted foot. The internal battery allows for up to four hours of autonomous operation, so users can continue to use the unit when walking to the final destination.
As well as guiding you across Europe, you can easily take the unit with you - it's slim and light design is perfect for slipping into a briefcase for that international business trip or the carry-on bag on a fly-drive holiday.
